Response to death of police service dog

Jonathan Denis, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General, issued the following statement in response to the death:

I want to offer my condolences to the Edmonton Police Service on the death earlier today of police service dog Quanto, and especially to his handler and partner Constable Matt Williamson. The connection between police officers and service dogs is very strong, and this will be a tough time for all who worked with Quanto.

Police service dogs are often deployed in dangerous circumstances to minimize harm to the public, police officers, and offenders. The dogs are a key part of a police service’s response capability. However, as we saw earlier today, their lives—like those of police officers—are also on the line in the fulfillment of their duties.

This unfortunate incident is a stark reminder of the dangers our police officers and their canine partners face every day. On behalf of Albertans, including everyone who has experienced a close bond with an animal, please accept our thoughts at this time, as well as our appreciation of the work of police across the province to keep our communities safe and secure.
